Zakynthos (Zante)

Greek Islands: Zakynthos

Zakynthos (also called Zante) is popular with visitors. Excellent transport links have helped Zakynthos to grow in prosperity and charm. Amazing rock formations are a highlight of many day trip tours.

Homer name-checked the island, in both the Iliad and the Odyssey and Zakinthos has had an eventful history being ruled by Romans, Franks, Venitians, Brits, Italians and Germans in its time.

Zakynthos is the third largest of the Ionian Islands. The capital city was rebuilt from scratch following an earthquake in 1953 that flattened the city.

Beaches on Zakynthos

Zakynthos has plenty of good beaches. Shipwreck beach (originally called Navagio beach) is stunning and only accessible by boats, as there is no road down the cliffs. This lovely bay has beautiful white sand, but the wreck of the MV Panagiotis which was wrecked here in 1980 is the attraction. It is still sitting on the beach, slowly decaying under the hot Greek sun.

Agios Nikolaos in the south is a great beach for watersports, but Tsilivi Beach & Planos Beach close to Zak town are a little crowded.

Shipwreck beach

Yes I agree about Shipwreck beach. If you come to Zante you really shouldn’t miss a day at this beach. The water is so clear, so bring your goggles and snorkel.

Zante appears in the guardian guide to europe’s best beaches.

We want to go to Zante

Can anyone recommend a 4 star hotel near a beach suitable for people who like authentic greek culture as well as the beaches, but don’t want to be kept up till 4 in the morning by discos blaring out thumping basslines and europop? Thanks

Traditional culture

I’ve been in Corfu island last year with my family. 3 years ago we had our vacation on Zakynthos island in a marvellous traditional stone villas near the famous and wild Navagio beach. The villa is named Myllos. Hope helping you!!
