Corfu is one of the most beautiful and popular of the larger greek islands. Corfu is best visited in spring and early summer and then in Autumn. At these times, the weather is perfect and the tourist activity is less frenetic than in high summer.

Kerkyra (Corfu Town) is a bustling port with lots of excitement. The Old Fortress of Corfu is stunning and should not be missed.

Reading Suggestions

Gerald Durrell’s excellent book “My Family and Other Animals” is a brilliant choice for anyone, young or old who is visiting Corfu. The book is a memoir of his childhood on the island with an excentric cast of characters and a great evocation of the landscape and wildlife that inspired the young Gerald and led him into a lifetime of promoting conservation and protecting the natural world.

Alternatively try the work by his older brother.  Prospero’s Cell by Lawrence Durrell. As you are climbing the cobblestone streets, enjoying the scenerey and above all meeting the locals, Durrell’s writings will help you to understand this most evocative of greek islands.
